We are a husband and wife hospitality marketing team. In a nutshell, I (Lisa) create digital advertising strategies and campaigns, beautiful websites, and marketing material while Tim captures rich images and video for promotional material, websites, and social media. I am the nerd, Tim is the visual talent. We also help lodging properties create policies and procedures that lead to high guest satisfaction and a smooth flow to the workplace.
From 1991 until 2013, Tim and I owned Lopstick Lodge, a hunting and fishing lodge in northern New Hampshire. We started with 8 cabins and a dream. The cabins, along with a tired, old lodge building, grossed less than 40k a year in the first year. When we sold, it boasted 43 cabins, an Orvis fly shop and outfitting operation, a fleet of boats, canoes and kayaks, a fleet of rental snowmobiles, a booming year-round business and a 7 figure gross annual revenue. In 2013, we were awarded the “Orvis Endorsed Outfitter of the Year”. We maintained a 5-star TripAdvisor rating from our very first review and for the past 5 years, Lopstick won TripAdvisor’s “Certificate of Excellence” award. Then, we put our marketing skills to work, created the now silent website, FlyFishingLodgeForSale.com, marketed the site, found our buyer and closed the deal. We completed the dream by moving to our second home on Rock Creek in Montana.
Tim started his career as a photographer for the Concord Monitor in New Hampshire. He went on to work for the Associated Press, The New Hampshire Times, and eventually his own photo studio.
From the time I was small child, my dream was to move to Pittsburg, New Hampshire. I loved to fish and hunt and yearned to combine the outdoor lifestyle with a job. Enter the real estate listing for Lopstick. I had been self employed since I was 19. At 25, we signed papers on Lopstick and moved to northern New Hampshire. Electricity lines ended 3 miles north of the lodge, DSL did not arrive until the fall of 2012 and occasionally the state of NH would publish a map that excluded the top 60 miles of the state. It was a challenge.
We started with 8 cabins…
A small start for sure. To that we added a fly fishing and bird hunting guide service. We added cabins as we could afford. We created a property management business to add to our rental pool. I became a licensed real estate broker in NH. We became an Orvis Endorsed Outfitter and hired a few guides. Before that, only Tim and I were the fly fishing guides and I was the bird hunting guide. We loved guiding but it was hard to juggle the expanding business and be on the water or in the woods. We bought our closest competitor, Magalloway Cabins in 2003 and took over another competitor in 2011; Metallak Shores Resort. We created a snowmobile rental business to boost occupancy and increase winter revenues. We rented canoes, kayaks, motor boats, snowmobile clothing and fly fishing gear. We opened an Orvis fly shop which converted into a gift shop as seasons changed. We were featured on television, in magazines, written about in books and we have authored chapters in books such as 50 Best Tailwaters to Fly Fish and 50 Best Places to Fish in the Northeast.
We know have to stretch advertising dollars, leverage word-of-mouth and customer testimonials. We know how to use hospitality keywords when building web pages to increase a site’s organic ranking. We leverage social sites to increase traffic to a company website. We are Search advertising experts. We created written policies and procedures for every job and situation to help our employees understand their jobs and our expectations of them. We have been physically involved in every construction project during our ownership. We were hands on but in the last few years of our ownership, we traveled together and separately 12 weeks a year.
Today we work with recreational hospitality properties and vacation destinations to increase visitor days, revenue and cash flow. We are hunters, fishers and travelers and are always willing to travel fishy spots to photograph accommodations, shoot a video tour, operational or end game consultations, a webcam install, trade show representation or guest speaking.
